Chapter 7: Body - State Control
Your body is the biggest piece of your unconscious mind and when you bring the body back into what we do, your changes happen faster, it's deeper and it doesn't matter what your listeners believe. It doesn't matter how much critical faculties are involved, the longer you get them engaged, the faster you overwrite their conscious critical faculty. You have to get your body involved.
No matter what situation or context we are in, if we can't control our state, if we can manage our psycho-emotional state, it doesn't matter what skills we have, it doesn't matter how much skills we have, it doesn't matter how much training we have. If we can't get into a state that allows us to access those resources we might as well not know them.
It's how we control our body states that determine the amplitude and the strength of the signals we send to another person's nervous system. It's not just about rapport, it's about how strong the signal we send is and the fastest way to do that is by changing our body states.
State control comes in two varieties :
1. Physiological
2. Volitional: Will power.
There is a saying and believe that you can't make people do things against their will, that is a lie because that will imply that people have a will to resist, most people do not especially in our modern times. Most people to muster any kind of will has to generate an emotional response, anger, desire, some kind of emotional response, to express, will power. Your will power is not an abstract concept it's based on two physiological phenomena or nutrients: blood sugar and sleep.
Your will power is based on the amount of blood sugar in your system and the amount of sleep you get. You burn up will power units, we call them self-regulating units; you have a finite amount. You burn them up anytime you have to exert control over your emotional states or your primal drives. When you run out of SRUs which are the functional units of your will power you will default to hedonistic, primal, unconscious behaviors.
We go through the day, and various things deplete our will power. We burn up our SRUs anytime we have to control ourselves, anytime we have to exert emotional control, anytime we have to quiet any kind of neurological arousal. One of the fastest ways to override the critical factor is intense emotion. Any form of emotion is neurological arousal, the higher the level of arousal in the nervous system, the faster your will power checks out.
As your day becomes more tasking, as you begin to deal with more stuff, you start to burn the tank at the end of the day you get home there's nothing left. Unconscious drives kick in, you start eating the cheesecake, drinking beer, watching internet porn, anything that gives you some kind of pleasure, hedonistic responses that relieve stress. Will power is a finite resource .
Will power can be trained.
